Professor Nanna Mik-Meyer: Cultural disability – inclusion and exclusion in the workplace
Prof. Nanna Mik-Meyer will discuss how employees with visible disability are “othered” in Danish work places. Her research departs in interviews with 19 managers and 43 colleagues to a disabled person in 13 different work places. The primary finding of her study is that co-workers spontaneously refer to other ‘different’ people (e.g. transvestites, homosexuals, immigrants) when talking about their colleague with visible impairments. She further shows that colleagues often also engages in a more childish interaction with their colleague with disability. Her study thus clarifies the inherent contradictions embedded in the dynamics of organizational behavior in relation to employees with disabilities.
